Awakened by rain, she releases geosmin: the earthy, intoxicating scent of petrichor, that unmistakable smell of rain on dry ground. Camels are astonishingly sensitive to geosmin, able to detect it in small amounts. Masters of drought and endurance, they follow these signals across the desert to precious water sources. The camel drinks, unknowingly gathering bacterial spores and carrying them onwards to the next oasis.
The bacteria gain passage. The camel finds water. Both thrive.
